Math

Mathematics in education operates as a powerful filter, serving as an important prerequisite to many fields of study. With a solid mathematical foundation and a record of achievement in mathematics, students’ choices about higher education are greatly expanded.

As a math department we group students based on skill level, not just on grade level or age. We recognize that mathematics can be a high anxiety activity for many people including our students. We work with the case management team, in-house services providers, and the inclusion/special education team to understand how academic stress and numerous assignments can be organized, modified and otherwise managed for our students. Depending on student needs and learning styles, we use tools such as: modifications to assignments or expectations for assignment completion; scheduling staff time with individual students or small student groups; using manipulatives, hands-on activities and visuals to accommodate learning styles; computer based learning software; and team teaching and small groupings to provide a smaller student to staff ratio as we are teaching math concepts.

Access to teaching materials is provided via links to the actual documents, handouts, videos, and Powerpoints used in the classroom. These are provided so that students, their parents/guardians and/or tutors can see and use the same materials outside of Lionsgate that are available in the classroom.
